What Next?
Welcome to the state that was founded by William Penn, the state that welcomed newcomers of every religious and political stripe, that gave birth to a Free Library, to support of science and medicine (Franklin’s kite), to refuge from slavery, to freedom of the press and the right to own private property. Penn created a model constitution that held many of the rights and liberties that would later be granted all citizens of the United States.
And now the poisonous politics of 2012 have given us a different model. Despite every imaginable historic and conceptual violation of individual freedom, Pennsylvania Republicans (and a lower court judge) have decided that the state can take away the right to vote. At least, "for now" and "for some." And according to the Republicans, “for now” and “for some” is good enough. There could be a significant loss of votes for the “other” and that is what the Republicans dreamed in public, right out front!
The same conservative machine that gave us denial of the Affordable Health Care Act, Fracking Unlimited, bashing of reproductive services from Planned Parenthood, lots of jolly gerrymandering, deep cuts to education, and no cuts to their own benefits, has now accomplished the unimaginable.
The rascals have succeeded in going backwards in time far enough to encompass forbidding thousands of people the vote. Here again is the poll tax, discrimination against people of color, senior citizens, and the working poor that do not drive a car. Welcome to Florida and Texas and South Dakota everyone. Somehow being in that company does not feel quite as nice as that of William Penn and his vision of the free Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
It isn’t over yet. There is also a tendency in this state for judges to wear Republican robes, especially in the lower courts. Wiser eyes will still examine the voter ID law and when they do, the vote will be sacred once again.

BTW ... BREAKING NEWS ... Poor Mrs. Applewhite, scourge of the "Republican Plan" and Champion of the Disenfranchised, actually got HER ID yesterday!! If she can get an ID, with all the difficulties in her life that were CERTAIN to rob her of her Constitutional Rights. anyone can in the three months remaining to the election.
In the meantime, only 0.28% (as of July) of the alleged 1 million "disenfranchisement" potential voters have bothered to see the process through to success.
0.28% ... They don't even care enough to try!

@Mike Why are conservatives so insensitive to hassling people and make them jump through hoops for a basic right like voting? What if Dems were in charge and made a law that forced idiots who didn't believe in evolution or global warming to go a university, talk to a scientist, and grow a brain before they voted? Would you say "OH WHAT WHINERS JUST GRAB YOUR IDIOT GRANDMOTHER AND BRING HER TO A SCIENTIST WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL"? My guess is no.
Not only do elderly, students, and the poor have to be inconvenienced to comply with Republicans trying suppress voters, but now the rest of us have to as well because we have to take time out of our lives to drive them around all day. Sounds totally and completely reasonable to me!

Oh my ... inconvenience ... THE HORROR!!!
I won't stoop to calling those I disagree with "idiots". But you have to admit, not being able to manage "inconvenience" tells you a lot about how some of these people get to where they are in life. Not all, but a good number of them.
Mrs Applewhite made it to a PENNDOT center and got her ID card yesterday. If she can, not many have an excuse for not getting there themselves.
Robert Fiorentino

When voter turnout is already only 50% and voting is not a holiday so you have to take off work or really plan around it, any additional inconvenience you add will make less people vote. And look at who gets inconvenienced - poor, women, college students...what a coincidence, the base of the Democratic party! And not only them, but those of us that have to drive them around and wait at the DMV for hours to get their IDs. Sure, we'll do it, but why should we have to? This is clearly a Republican ploy to suppress voters, it's just disheartening to have to live in this system.
Why don't you drive to the DMV tomorrow and wait there for a few hours? If it's not too much of an inconvenience, why don't you prove your point and go yourself?
Mike Shortall
11:12 am on Friday, August 17, 2012
A few thing here, Robert ...
a) I did my time at the DMV, including getting my mother a PHOTO ID so she could travel by plane.
b) Again with the "inconvenience"?!? Really? Inconveniencing college students?!? You can do that by telling them to get out of bed in the morning! BTW ... That's why they have absentee ballots!
c) If your argument is that "women are more inconvenienced" by the voter ID law (although I don't see how they would be more inconvenienced than men), Republicans have a nice chunk of the female vote as well, meaning the requirements of the voter ID law are applied equally as without discrimination to BOTH democrats and Republicans. Just as Judge Simpson said it is!
You oughta look for another word other than "inconvenience". It doesn't ring very high on the Sympathy Meter.

If someone depended on another to drive them for a photo ID, they would also require someone to transport them to the voting poll. Let's face it, if it weren't for the rampant voter fraud (e.g., dead people voting) taking place over the last 25 years in Philadelphia and other larger cities, this wouldn't be necessary. If you don't believe it, quit drinking the cool-aide and research it yourself. Additionally, why was it not an voter infraction to require people to REGISTER to vote? Somehow that was not a great infringement on voter rights.

There should never be barriers to voting. It shouldn't cost money. Poll taxes are illegal, I don't care if you need an ID to buy cigarettes or whatever else, voting is a basic right as an American citizen. Imagine if Democratic-led Houses charged an "idiot tax" to people who didn't believe in climate change or evolution.

I cannot believe all the nonsense around this issue. It makes me wonder what people have to hide if they cannot provide id to vote. In my opinion if you object to proving yourself you are not deserving of the priviledges of honesty. If you have the legal right to vote then prove it, simple as that.

You always needed ID to vote, now you need photo ID. You always had to prove who you were, now you need to spend money and time to get a *photo ID*. Many Democratic city voters don't have or need a driver's license, so this creates a barrier for them to vote.

Actually, Robert, if someone needs a Photo ID who does not already possess the following: United States Government Photo ID, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Photo ID, Identification issued by a municipality of this Commonwealth, Identification issued by an accredited Pennsylvania public or private institution of higher learning, Identification issued by a Pennsylvania care facility, they can then have the fee of $13.50 waived. They just have to show proof of residency (2 items) and one of the following: (which they would have to prove when registering to vote in the first place...)
Certificate of U.S. Citizenship
Certificate of Naturalization
Valid U.S. Passport
*Birth Certificate with a raised seal
So....maybe you should educate yourself.

Jean,
For most voters polls are close. There are 300 polling places in Bucks County. There are only 2 driver's license centers. In Doylestown several of our polling places are in senior residences. All of that is to accommodate voters.
Safeguards are important to voting. Voter registration is one of the safeguards. So is requiring first time voters to show proof of residence. So is signing the book.
People "say" that there's voter impersonation fraud, but the state has said in court that it has found no cases in the whole state (or nearby states) that were charged or even under investigation. A person who impersonates another voter is subject to a $10,000 fine and a 5-year jail term.
This law was not devised to prevent fraud. It was designed to prevent "city" people, poor people, minorities (mostly Democrats) from voting. I'm not saying that; the head of the Republican caucus in the state of PA is on record as saying it.

I know that you're kidding. First of all a free library is only free if you return your books on time. Seriously, I'd have to guess that your tax dollars pay for all of those "free" libraries spread around the area and I'm pretty sure that you can't take out a book unless you have photo ID. I moved from Doylestown 6 years ago and registered to vote in my new location. I showed ID the first and last times that I voted. In between not one of the poll workers has said, "Hi John, how are you today"? A pretty good indication that they had no idea whom I was until I told them. My polling place is about 4 miles from my house and many drive as many as 7 or 8 to exercise their right to vote in my township. If you don't drive there are county sponsored transportation buses that will take residents to a photo ID drivers center to get an ID. To purchse prescription drugs, alcohol and tobacco or to get welfare and unemployment you need a photo ID. Some people need a photo ID just to go to work. Many of the poll workers don't have a clue whom you may be so why are you afraid to show them?

Here's what next, according to several Democrats:
* Philadelphia City Councilman Bill Green dares the State to "Let them come and enforce it!" in a Tweet.
* Colwyn Judge of Elections, Christopher L. Broach along with several other Deomcrat election workers and poll watchers declare they will not enforce a legally-passed, constitutionally-tested law dealing with the integrity of the vote.
And suddenly, all those "paranoid imaginings" - pooh-poohed by those opposed to the voter ID law - of inner city polling places crowded with illegal voters as Big City pols nod and wink don't seem all that crazy afterall.
But of course, they never would have even thought of doing such things BEFORE this law was passed. Hmmmm ....

Here's the Romney-Ryan Plan:
1. Tax poor & working people but not the rich;
2. Encourage wages in the U.S. to fall to third world levels;
3. Pass trade laws that make it easy for companies to send jobs overseas;
4. Pass laws that enable only insurance companies to control who gets health care (including seniors) and who doesn't;
5. Replace public education with out of pocket private schools and home schooling;
6. Refuse to invest in crumbling public infrastructure such as highways, bridges, and sewer systems;
7. Environmental Policy: Pass laws and weaken regulations that enable companies to pollute the environment;
8. Pass laws that enable gas and oil production and prices to be controlled by a few large companies; Make sure that there is no longer any research or work on alternative energy sources; Keep defense spending high to protect non domestic oil production;
9. Repress rights for women and minorities and repress voting participation;
10. Divide the American people on cultural issues (religion, sexual orientation, gun rights, etc);
11. Instill fear in the American public through manufactured crises and created "boogeymen". Then attack political opponents by claiming to be more "patriotic" and the better keeper of "American Values" than they.
12. Make it impossible for literally millions of ELIGIBLE voters to cast their ballots, which is flagrant vote tampering and corruption.

In re: #6 "Refuse to invest in crumbling public infrastructure....". Direct quote from Pres. Obama after stimulus money was taken from the future generations pockets "Shovel ready was not as ready as expected". Seems Obama refused to invest our tax money in "crumbling public infrastructure." #10 "Divide the American people on cultural issues (religion, sexual orientation, gun rights, etc.). Obama stated countless times that he believed marriage was between a man and a woman. As his campaigning ramped up & realizing that he has no record to run on, he switches or flip flops and decides now marriage can be between whomever. Total ploy that those who do not use their brain,, fell for. Biden's "ya'll..." comment the other day will divide the races. Biden was born in Pennsylvania, he has no southern accent, yet puts one on to pander to the black audience. Whom is dividing the races? Public education has the highest drop out rates in urban area's. Either we continue to throw good tax money after bad or we finally accept there are many in the lower class that do not want the free education offered to them. Why not privatize? A privledge given to all is spit upon by many. Those that wish to learn, will, those that don't will continue what their past generations have done, cry 'poor me' and they'll put their hand out for entitlements instead of accepting the hand up that has been given to them for many years. Instead of listening to so called talking heads, think for yourself.

Unfortunately VM there is something else to say. Penndot estimated 9% of PA voters do not have the required ID to vote. You say you have no idea how someone could possibly operate on any level in this society without a picture ID. Well according to Penndot there are something like 700,000 to 900,000 people in PA alone that are operating just fine, so maybe there's more of a problem with your ability to process that possibility and less of a problem with the previous voting system. Voting is a right, annual mamograms at Doylestown Hospital is not a right. I'm sure there are ways to get mamograms without a photo ID. This is a partisan tactic by Republicans to suppress Democratic voters, and I believe *now* there is nothing else to say.

My mother in law is 84 and has many health issues. I take her to doctors all the time. They all require a photo ID. She has always shown them her EXPIRED license, and they accept it, copy it, and give it back. She hasn't needed a current photo ID for anything in her life, until this voting law came up.
It took two visits to the DMV, quite a feat for her since she can barely walk. And I had to argue with the worker there that it was supposed to be free, they wanted to charge for the free ID. My mother in law was tired of arguing and was going to just pay it, until a supervisor told the worker that it is indeed free.
My question is, ok, it's good for everyone to have current ID. But since when do laws take effect so quickly? This should have been put in place for 2016, not this current election. Not everyone has a daughter in law who can take off work TWICE to get them to the DMV.

Good evening! Regarding the comments so far on “What next”: some seem to think that the voter ID bill is necessary because of rampant fraud in Philadelphia (although nobody in the PA Attorney General’s office could find any this year or in the past). Popular reason # 2 is that everyone needs a picture ID sometime for something so get over your laziness and ineptitude and get it done. A few have been willing to defend free and unhindered voting as a civil right. Personally, I think nobody so far has addressed some very obvious reasons to hate the bill.
1. It is expensive to set up, expensive to maintain, and will be expensive to defend. It costs tax money big time. Are we okay with using tax money to verify, print, and mail photo IDs to every citizen? Hang on. Very soon we will have another line item in the budget contrived by the same Republicans who claim to be cutting taxes and saving you money.
2. The bill costs time! Long lines, waits, applying for this or that, and then having to wait while everybody ahead of you in the line is either verified or challenged, is costly. Time is money! Are you good at waiting in line?
3. Demanding Photo ID issued by the state is sort of creepy. Will somebody soon be writing a bill that requires tattooing a number on us, or perhaps inserting a special magnet under the skin? That would really prevent mix-ups right?
Take your pick.
