New Documentary Highlights Local Explorer's Trek Across Great Wall

The Doylestown Historical Society premieres 'Geil of Doylestown: Forgotten Explorer' at the County Theater Saturday.

He was a preacher who could hold thousands spellbound...a photographer who captured images of vanishing cultures...an explorer who traveled to the ends of the earth. And then, he was forgotten. A century ago, William Edgar Geil (1865-1925) was the first person to travel the length of the Great Wall of China. Yet he remains unknown to modern audiences, even in his hometown. "Geil of Doylestown: Forgotten Explorer" revives his extraordinary legacy. The 43-minute documentary will premiere on May 4 at 12:30 p.m. at the County Theater, 20 E. State St., Doylestown. The Doylestown Historical Society is sponsoring the event. Karl Stieg, a recent graduate from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, directed “Forgotten …

This is an incredible film that I encourage all Doylestown residents to see. Apart for the compelling life story of Geil, the beautiful cinematography and overall polish of the piece is really first rate. From the Great Wall to neighborhoods in Dtown, this is a compelling work that captures a piece of our local history that was almost gone forever. Bravo.   more ›

'The North Star' Screening Debuts in Doylestown

Cameras flashed as former Philadelphia Eagle Jeremiah Trotter emerged from a horse-drawn carriage for the debut screening of 'The North Star.'

When Jeremiah Trotter left professional football in 2009, he retired as one of the most popular Philadelphia Eagles ever. Hopping out of a horse-drawn carriage in front of the County Theater Thursday afternoon, it's clear that popularity has not waned. His fans swarmed the former middle linebacker, snapping pictures and asking for autographs as Trotter made his way to the theater doors to find a seat for the screening of his feature film debut in The North Star.  Filmed on location throughout Bucks County last year, The North Star tells the true story of two runaway slaves who escape a Virginia plantation and make their way via the Underground Railroad to Buckingham. The movie also stars Keith David, Clifton Powell, Lynn Whitfield and …

These Shoes are Made for Winning Money

Custom designed shoes created by students from Central Bucks South helped the school place in the top 50 finalists and earn a chance to win $60,000.

Central Bucks High School South art teacher Jessica Fidler had students in her fine arts classes created a line of custom sneakers using shoes donated by Vans Shoes as part of its annual Custom Culture art competition. The students were then responsible for designing and executing four designs based on the following categories: art, music, action sports, and local flavor. The finished products are currently on display in South’s showcase by the main office. The students joined a field of 1,500 other entries and impressed the judges at Vans Shoes enough to make it into the top 50.  The contest now divides the schools into five separate regions, 10 each, and turns the voting over to the community. The public can cast their ballots at this …

Red Carpet Rollout for 'North Star' in Bucks County

The locally shot film screens at the County Theater and Newtown Theater next week. Directed by CB West graduate Thomas Phillips and starring former Eagle Jeremiah Trotter, the movie recounts Bucks County's role in the Underground Railroad.

After months of writing, casting, shooting and post-production, The North Star is set to screen next week. Since principle photography was shot all over Bucks County by a cast and crew led by Buckingham's Thomas K. Phillips, it's only fitting that the film debuts in Doylestown and Newtown. The County Theater hosts the first preview screening on Thursday, May 2 with a full afternoon of events starting at 4:30 p.m., leading up to the 6:30 p.m. red carpet rollout. The Doylestown Historical Society (DHS) has prepared historic elements from the movie to be staged along State Street before the show. The 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. screenings have sold out, but the DHS invites folks to dress up in period costumes for chance to enter a drawing for a seat…
