This Doc Knows How to Rock

A Doylestown Hospital spinal surgeon will play guitar this weekend for juvenile diabetes.

Guy Lee is a spinal surgeon, a Catholic and the lead guitarist in a Doylestown-based classic rock cover band.

None of those things are mutually exclusive. Indeed, each of those facts played a vital role in shaping Lee into who he is today.

"My wife keeps on asking me when I'm gonna grow up," Lee said Thursday. "But for me, it's something fun to do. I'm a spine surgeon, so when my phone rings, it's always serious - someone's paralyzed, or something else terrible has happened. This is a good release for me."

Lee plays lead guitar and sings for the Doylestown-based band Rose's Cross. This Sunday, the band will play in a benefit to raise money for juvenile diabetes.

Named after Lee's wife, Rose, Rose's Cross initially was formed to save local Catholic parishes some money.

"We go to Our Lady of Guadalupe, and our kids go to school at ," Lee said. "The people running their benefits were paying four to five thousand dollars to the band each time, so we put Rose's Cross together as a way to avoid that."

Besides Lee, band members include Joe Brill on bass guitar and vocals, Ron Dolan on keyboards, rhythm guitar, percussion and vocals, Herm Reiche on drums, and Steve Van Scott on guitar and vocals.

Like most good ideas, Rose's Cross has matured since its inception. The band still plays plenty of beef 'n beers and other fundraisers, but it's also played at such venues as in Doylestown, for private parties at , and more.

And in addition to covers of Tom Petty and the Rolling Stones, they're now performing original music, written by Van Scott.

They've not forgotten their original mission, though, which is to help raise money for good causes. That's why they said "yes" without hesitation when asked to play at Rockin' Docs for Diabetes Cure.

The benefit concert starts at 1:30 p.m on Sunday at Philadelphia's Electric Factory. All the bands include doctors from , Abington Memorial Hospital, and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Rose's Cross represents Doylestown Hospital, where Lee has worked for 11 years (he also works at Abington Memorial Hospital.)

Osler Circle is composed of doctors from CHOP, Consenting Adults includes Dr. Ken Einhorn, of Abington Memorial, and Rightback includes Dr. Jeremy Jaffe, an anesthesiologist associated with Abington Memorial.

Einhorn and Jaffe dreamed up the Rockin' Docs event; both men have children with Type 1 diabetes, and Jaffe was diagnosed with the disease himself more than 20 years ago.

Andre Gardner, of WMGK, will emcee the show, which is expected to run from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets start at $12.50 for children and $25 for adults; for more information, visit the event's website.

All proceeds will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
