Students Volunteer Service to NOVA Thrift Shop

They participated in Martin Luther King Jr. ‘Day On’

A group of student volunteers from United Friends School in Quakertown used their day off from school on January 16, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as a “Day On,” coming to NOVA Thrift Shop on Route 313 in Fountainville to clean and organize the children’s room.

“We wanted to follow the example of service to others set by Martin Luther King Jr. and others,” says Bill Hoblin, parent and organizer of the initiative. “So instead of taking the day off, we decided to treat it as a ‘day on’ to honor Dr. King.”

The students and parents rolled up their sleeves and tackled the cleaning, minor repairing and organizing of the room that contains children’s clothes, books, videos, DVDs and games at NOVA Thrift Shop. NOVA Thrift sells donated gently worn clothing and used housewares to raise funds to support the initiatives of Network of Victim Assistance in Bucks County.

“It was a treat to work side-by-side with our kids. And the kids enjoyed doing meaningful service for others a lot more than, say, cleaning the garage or their own rooms.”
