When Shannon Lelli opened Planet Smoothie on Sept. 20, 2002, the business was her first baby.

Since then, she has had four other babies, human ones. But her first baby is still growing and thriving.

On Thursday, Lelli will celebrate 10 years in business with a birthday party for the customers she credits with keeping her going.

"We just really wanted to say thank you to all our wonderful customers," Lelli said Wednesday.

The brightly painted shop on West State Street attracts a good number of regular customers. Chief among them is Tom Newman.

Newman visits Planet Smoothie every day, and has done so for eight years. Yes, daily, for eight years.

He gets the same thing everyday, a custom concoction of blueberries and acai. The recipe is posted behind the counter and Lelli said it's one of the first smoothies new employees learn to make.

When asked what keeps him coming back, Newman, a financial advisor with Doylestown's Wells Fargo office, said the healthy treat is only one attraction.

"She is very particular about the people she hires," he said, gesturing to Lelli. "They're all polite and they treat me really well. I love coming in."

Lelli and company are throwing an all-day anniversary bash at the Planet Smoothie store Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., with special events from 3 to 6 p.m.

The event will include prizes, snacks, a Gamin’ Ride video game truck and a CrossFit challenge sponsored by BucksElite CrossFit Sine Pari. Customers will receive Planet Smoothie merchandise, discounts and giveaways throughout the day, Lelli said.

Guests also will have the chance to make tie-dye clothing to benefit Worthwhile Wear, a charity focused on preventing human trafficking and supporting at-risk women through education and vocational training centers.
