The casualties continue to mount.

Once the Philadelphia Eagles fired Andy Reid, you knew that any new coach coming on board would want to shake up the roster.

Now that Chip Kelly is here, General Manager Howie Roseman is starting to make some roster cuts.

That's expected from any team once a season concludes and a Super Bowl ends. This time of the year is the business side of football when front offices review contracts and try to cut corners to help with some manueverability with the salary cap.

The Eagles are no different.

The first move the team made was restructing the contract of Quarterback Michael Vick, ensuring that he wouldn't be paid $15 million next year.

Then, with a healthy return of tackle Jason Peters expected, the team made a smart move by cutting ties with disappointing replacement DeMetrius Bell, who couldn't even unseat King Dunlap at the position.

Now the focus is on defense.

First, the Birds decided that cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was really not in the team's plans based on his poor play last season. So the team won't be making an offer to this high-profile free agent.

And this past week the team shed wide bodies Mike Patterson, a longtime Eagle, and Cullen Jenkins, one of the "Dream Team" free agent busts.

Those moves were designed as measures for the Birds to set up a new defense with an attacking unit that may focus on a 3-4 instead of a 4-3. Patterson and Jenkins just didn't fit the bill.

The interesting roster decision will be what to do with cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who when signed as a free agent was supposed to be the best in the business.

He's probably been the Birds' biggest bust the past two years.

Asomugha is expected to get $4 million if the team releases him and the Eagles have been in talks with his agent to maybe restructure his contract.

Maybe Asomugha just wasn't utilized properly under Reid's defensive generals. Maybe a fresh start might make this free agent bust return to his All-Pro ways.

But, in the coming weeks as the NFL Draft nears, expect the Philadelphia Eagles to keep making more roster moves and to keep shedding players who were part of losing efforts the past two years.
