Kids Triathlon to Return to Doylestown
After taking a year off, the Kids Triathlon comes back to Doylestown in June.
After a one year hiatus, the Kids Triathlon is back.
Held at Chapman Park and Fanny Chapman Pool, the triathalon will return to Doylestown on Sunday, June 2, 2013.
It is open to kids ages 7 to 15; registration is open now and continues through May 26.
And don't think your child needs to have a professional-grade bicycle or endorsement-worthy running shoes.
"It really is for everyone," Mark Douple told Patch on Wednesday. "We’ve had kids come in geared up with all the fancy bikes and fancy clothes, all the way to kids who have a basket on the front of their bike and tassels on the handlebars."
"It’s an introductory triathlon just to get kids to see if they’re interested in doing something like this. Maybe it will spark their interest in continuing, and in being healthy," said Douple, a Doylestown Borough resident who has been involved with the event since the beginning.
Doylestown's Kids Triathlon began in 2005 and has been an annual event, except for last year.
The triple-sport race consists of a swimming leg, a biking leg and a running leg. Distances vary according to the three age groups: 7 to 9; 10 to 12, 13 to 15.
Each year, more and more children have participated, Douple said, with as many as 300 coming out one year.
Several sponsors and organizers are coming together this year to bring the race back, including Doylestown Borough and Doylestown Township, Fanny Chapman pool, Bike Works Doylestown, T Wiley Sports and Mind Your Design.
In addition to sponsors, Douple said the group is looking for volunteers to help on race day. In past years, they've needed 70 to 100 volunteers, he said.
"It’s basically three races back-to-back, so we need people to cover the pool area, the bicycle course and the running course," Douple said. "Volunteers are critical for us to be able to continue to run this event."
