'How Much Do You Want for That Nude?'

At this yard sale, you won't find any knickknacks, toys, household appliances or furniture. It's strictly art.

Any bargain hunter knows that yard sales are a good place to score some great deals.

Where else can you get the latest James Patterson thriller for a dollar? Or a handmade, Italian ceramic pitcher for $3? And you know you won’t be able to function in the kitchen unless you grab that yogurt maker priced to sell at five bucks (OK, they’ll take three).

With the yard sale season still going strong, there’s an unusual one set to be held this weekend in Doylestown.

It’s an art yard sale – all works done by a handful of talented individuals in the local artistic community.

John Huber is a graphic designer/fine artist living in Doylestown. He’ll be offering oil, pastels and pencil drawings. Other artists include Mark McCoy of Plumsteadville, who works in oils; Jackie Calderone also of Plumsteadville, who’s contributing watercolors; Jerry Perkins of Doylestown, who’ll be represented in pastels and charcoal; and some other artist friends as well.

Sizes of pieces, as well as subjects, run the gamut. Expect landscapes, abstracts, still lifes and nudes/figures. Look for 5x7 pieces all the way up to 24x36, he said. Some are matted but not framed.

You’ll find pieces that haven’t been finished – drawings ripped out of a sketchbook, for example – to exercises done at local drawing sessions, as well as finished pieces that have shown at area art galleries.

And prices? You can walk away with something for as little as $10, or spend more, going into triple digits.

But keep in mind, everything is one-of-a-kind.

“It’s all original art,” said Huber.

Huber said the group got the idea for an all-art sale earlier this season when they held a regular yard sale.

Aside from the requisite yard sale items – salad spinners, costume jewelry, lamps and other household articles – someone put out about 100 small pieces of landscapes, nudes and still lifes painted on boards that were studio leftovers. Priced to sell, they were pleasantly surprised at how quickly they went.

“We said maybe we should just do this as the only thing we were doing,” Huber said, and the consensus agreed.

They picked this weekend because it coincided with Doylestown’s annual Arts Festival.

“We figured having it during the arts festival would be great, since people already interested in art were going to be in town,” said Huber.

So the yard sale at 224 W. Court St. will be held during arts festival hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Oh, and no early birds allowed.

It’ll also be held weather permitting. So far, according to the National Weather Service, it doesn’t look like any rain is in store for the Doylestown area over the weekend.

Check them out.

Who knows? The treasure you may buy could turn out to be painted by the next Daniel Garber or Edward Redfield of Bucks County.
