Hospital-Shaped Cake Star of the Show

Doylestown Hospital cut into the realistic, three-dimensional model of the hospital to celebrate several recent achievements.

What’s 4-feet by 6-feet, shaped like a hospital, and tastes great? A three-dimensional rendering of Doylestown Hospital in cake! The giant confection was ceremoniously cut on Thursday, May 24 in the Fresh Inspirations cafeteria at Doylestown Hospital.

The occasion for the cake was the recognition of Doylestown Hospital’s achievements, which confirm the hospital’s commitment to quality and patient safety. Doylestown Hospital is one of the 100 best hospitals in the U.S., according to the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals® study released in April 2012. The annual study evaluated almost 3,000 acute care hospitals and health systems nationwide based on their overall clinical performance. Doylestown Hospital is also one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals, according to Thomson Reuters (2011). The study examined the performance of more than 1,000 hospitals by analyzing outcomes for patients with heart failure and heart attacks and for those who received coronary bypass surgery and percutaneous coronary interventions such as angioplasties.

The cake was created by Cakes by Kharis, a Philadelphia cake shop that specializes in unique wedding cakes and special occasion edible showpieces. The cake is three feet high and depicts Doylestown Hospital and its grounds. Hospital administrators cut one of the “buildings” during a celebration event on Thursday for hospital staff and volunteers.

According to Scott Levy, MD, the hospital’s chief medical officer, “Our objective has always been to provide the best possible care for our community–we never consider specific awards in and of themselves as a goal of the hospital. However, it is extremely gratifying to receive this national recognition and we consider this an extraordinary achievement for our organization.”
