A Beautiful Afternoon at Hammerstein's Doylestown Home

Broadway buffs and the nostalgic strolled through what's left of the lyricist's estate Friday.

High school actors and actresses in gingham skirts and suspenders greeted hundreds of people Friday afternoon for an open house at the former home of one of Doylestown's favorite sons.

The young men and women from Central Bucks West serenaded the crowds with numbers from their upcoming performance of Oklahoma! Longtime Doylestown residents told tales from days gone by. And kids climbed trees while adults strolled through the grounds and the barn that once belonged to Oscar Hammerstein II.

Hammerstein and his family moved to Highland Farm on East Road in Doylestown Township in 1940, two years before he began his partnership with composer Richard Rodgers. Hammerstein wrote lyrics and librettos for Broadway musicals while dividing his time between his working cattle farm and his Manhattan apartment.
